Presentation

Located on the left bank of Rio Black distant, 13 km from the confluence with the river Solimões, the Port of Manaus constitutes the main entrance to the State of Amazonas.

At the end of the 19th century, the explosion of rubber pushed more and more the commercial flow and brought great profits to the state. All this intense activity needed a point equipped with the best infrastructure and technology available at the time to support the flow of latex, extracted in the region that had as its destination the major shopping centers of the world. The structure on site required an extension that would support the docking of ships of great silence.

In 1899 competition was opened for the construction of the new port, but the works only started in 1902, under the contract with the English firm Manaós Harbour Limited.

The implementation of the port by the English, meant for the society of the early twentieth century, a movement of modernity, which added to the peak of rubber, erected a powerful trade in Manaus. The balance of the economic activities carried out in the port area scored the lives of manauaras, making the meeting place, where entire families walked on weekends and were dazzled by the arrivals and departures of ships, celebrated and great event of the time.

The port, in the first decades of the 20th century, represented not only a point of mercantile activity, but also a cultural connection with the rest of the world. All this rapid development made the city of Manaus reference of social, political, economic and cultural evolution.
